tag » mashup

Yes, I think any Star Wars jokes instantly qualify for the “nerd alert!” tag.

Take a movie scene, add a completely inappropriate soundtrack, and ruin the scene:

Well, ripersnifler might have just turned 2001 into the greatest music video, but you get the idea. It started on Something Awful, Kottke has a few more, and YouTube has them all.

soundamus - web service that provides a RSS feed of new and upcoming albums based on artists you scrobble on Last.fm. Also known as: the most useful mashup of 2008.

PostSecret expands to feline user base

First, some background: PostSecret is “an ongoing community art project in which people mail their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard”. Updated every Sunday, the project has been a source of great catharsis for an immeasurable number of people. PostSecret began as an art installation in 2004, came online in 2005, and has since been an inspiration to people across the world.

On the other hand, Lolcats (see: 1, 2, 3) is also an ongoing community art project, but not contained on one specific website. Started (arguably) on 4chan in a thread lovingly named “Caturday”, the internet meme has spread and evolved across the internet (e.g., LOLmetal). Lolcats, however, in any form, has never lost its main tenets: unbeatable humor and a lust for life.

Which brings us to LOLsecretz, “the meeting of two of the internet’s most famous memes”. Anyone following the development of PostSecret has undoubtedly thought to themselves that such a project has always been a bit speciesist. Thankfully, the creators of LOLsecretz have taken it upon themselves to do something about it.

A sad confession:

Find more at the LOLsecretz website.

The Order of the Science Scouts of Exemplary Repute and Above Average Physique is an up-and-coming group of alcohol imbibers and science writers (in all their various incarnations). Like any good order, the O.O.T.S.S.O.E.R.A.A.A.P. is chock full of merit badges. The “cloner” badge certainly has potential: In which the recipient has cloned something or other. Rules to a drinking game concerning this badge will be forthcoming.

I love mashups so much. Wheel of Food, bringing together the greatness of Yahoo! Local and Wheel of Fortune to let the internet choose your lunch for you.

Wikisky.org. Think of it as Google Maps for the universe.

iConcertCal is a free iTunes plug-in that monitors your music library and generates a personalized calendar of upcoming concerts in your city. I have avoided iTunes until now, but this is making me terribly tempted.

Monty Python’s “Dead Parrot” sketch as performed by Nigerian email scammers. Another fine presentation brought to you by 419eater.com, the cause of such wonders as The Incredible Shrinking Artwork and other great scambaiting.

Ben & Jerry’s presents Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream. Vanilla ice cream, fudge-covered waffle pieces, and caramel. Damn delicious. “Announcing the new flavor Wednesday, Ben & Jerry’s called it: ‘The sweet taste of liberty in your mouth.’”

1. 31. 07. Never forget.

A massive directory of webcomics. Some notable comics are missing from the list (e.g., A Softer World), but with 2548 comics (and counting) listed, you’re bound to find something. Of course, you could always submit a comic if something’s missing.

In The Nietzsche Family Circus, Dolly, while sitting at a table drawing, states, “For art to exist, for any sort of aesthetic activity to exist, a certain physiological precondition is indispensable: intoxication.”

Musick in the Head has put together a list of Music 2.0 companies. What the hell is a Music 2.0 company? I don’t know, but all the companies “are doing something interesting with music online.”

Last.fm mashups are nothing new. There’s PandoraFM, which submits the songs you’re listening to on Pandora to Last.fm. There’s Upcomingscrobbler, linking Last.fm and Upcoming.org to show you upcoming concerts in your area for artists on your Last.fm. There is even Snapp Radio, a service that displays pictures from Flickr based on the music you’re listening to from Last.fm. And, now, there’s something new: Last.tv, serving up music videos from YouTube based on your Last.fm profile.

do the right thing.com, a Digg/Newsvine-like news site revolving around the positive or negative social impact of businesses. Stories are submitted, then voted on their positive/negative impact, averaged, and bam: social impact.

Ever had trouble making decision? Wish you had a group of complete strangers around to vote on which decision to make? Now you can! With doxory.com, life by committee, your prayers have been answered!

OhMiBod. iPod + vibrator. Heaven.

Daylife aggregates news from around the world in a very multimedia-rich format. Stories are organized by recency, people, organizations, geography, subject, and more. Then you could use yourself a reasonable optical near joint access!

Kelly Osbourne rejected by Playboy. The 22-year-old curvaceous daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne recently said that she would like to appear in the infamous magazine. But in an interview, Hugh Hefner said, “I can’t see it happening somehow - we don’t airbrush to that extent.”

The ad generator remixes words and semantic structures from real corporate slogans to generate invented slogans. These slogans are then paired with related images from Flickr, thereby generating fake advertisements on the fly.

Where I Had My First Kiss (dot com) is another in a long line of Google Map mashups, this time coordinating where (duh) people had their first kisses. Thanks to the simplicity of the Google Maps API, many such mashups have come out: Google/Yahoo Traffic & Weather, HOT or NOT, Cheap gas, HousingMaps (Craigslist + Google Maps), New York City subway. And that’s hardly all of them. Check out Lifehack.org for more.

YOU are #16 in the BEAST 50 Most Loathsome People in America, 2006, right down there with Tony Snow and Britney Spears. You, who is “more worried about friction on the “Desperate Housewives” set than the lack of health coverage at your tedious, soul-destroying job. You are why democracy doesn’t work.”

The rules are simple: this guy puts the self-timer on two seconds, and runs as far from the camera as he can.

To begin with, some art. Fans of the Museum of Modern Art can now purchase a fifty page book containing sketches of every piece of art in the museum. The aptly titled The Every Piece Of Art in The Museum Of Modern Art Book even comes in a deluxe edition, complete with guided tour and hot dog or pretzel.

After AOL released that huge batch of search queries (see August 13’s Undressing the Internet), various sites have scoured the files looking for interesting users. Valleywag.com has started an AOL creepy user watch, up to Volume 15 already. Slate is also chiming in, providing the seven ways people search the web. I’m an omnivore now, but I’m working my way toward obsessive.

YES.com, a site designed to give you the currently playing song and previously playing songs for any radio station across the country. It’s a work in progress, I suppose, but the bigger stations in my area work.

All those lists of “Best Places to Live!” and “Best Places to Work!” and “Best Places to Die!” and so on are obviously subjective. Although the choices in the lists may be good on whatever scale the editor chose, they could easily fail for you. With this in mind comes Find Your Spot, a service which provides you with a tailored list of best places to live based on a questionnaire you fill out. New Jersey? Nowhere on my list. Baltimore, Maryland? #1.

One more in the internet’s long list of useful websites: GopherNow - Your guide to late-night restaurants around the country.

While some are contemplating how to implement a “brightnet”, the Swedish Pirate Party has recently launched the world’s first commercial darknet. This darknet, or private network, allows for completely anonymous file sharing between any users on the network. Richard Falkvinge, chairman of the Pirate Party, believes “we have a moral obligation to protect the citizens from the effects of the current routine surveillance. This is our technical means to do just that.” Visit Relakks.com to sign up.

TIME.com has come out with both a list of the 50 Coolest Websites and 25 websites they can’t live without. I’m rooting for Undress Me Robot to make the list next year.

Other Undress Me Robot staffers might not enjoy Gnarls Barkley so much, but I haven’t listened to the St. Elsewhere, and Crazy and Smiley Faces tempt me to go buy the album. Until then, I’ll just sit back and enjoy the Gnarls Barkley and Notorious B.I.G. mashup: Gnarls Biggie.

More YouTube goodness: Mat Weddle - “Hey Ya” (Outkast cover).
For the mp3: http://trafficsau.de/stuff/heyya.mp3

And more: Dante and Randal from Clerks in “The Flying Car”. An oldie but goodie.

Yousendit not cutting it these days? Try rarhost for all your .rar file hosting needs.

Wolverine or Freakboy?

George Bush may have read Albert Camus’ novel The Stranger, but I refuse to believe he “discussed the origins of existentialism”.

I leave you, at this premature ending, with sex.

An Ohio school board is expanding sex education following the revelation that 13 percent of one high school’s female students were pregnant last year.

A woman’s sex drive begins to plummet once she is in a secure relationship, according to research.

Blondes may have more fun but redheads have more sex, according to new research in Germany.
