After three other borderline ambient and generally soft sounding albums, Mum, Iceland’s third most famous band, finally decided to liven up their sound. The new album has only three quiet, sleepy songs. The rest of the tracks are pumped with chipper electronic energy, one that was hinted at with one or two songs per album before Go Go Smear Poison Ivy. On this album, however, they’ve really let loose and focused on my personal aspect of their music – the fun one. They repeatedly incorporate sounds of accordions, auto harps, melodicas and bells - one song even loops a sample of people meowing, luckily in a way that’s not annoying. What Mum has kept consistent with previous albums is their songs’ long, drawn out buildups, similar to that of Sigur Ros, just with more electronics and less post rock. They finally perfected the mashing of high girlish voices with soft manly voices, and they use that dichotomy in choruses that people can finally sing along to. Mum is finally more personable.
