Sigur Ros @ Boston Opera House Sept. 16th 2005

Grade: A+

Sigur Ros just...gets it. They understand everything. They have the key to unlock the universe. Seriously.

I walked into the Opera House gazing at the shadows on the stage. A huge partly green, partly transparent screen covered the stage as the lights glared, allowing the shadows to form. The three visible shadows danced for us, even though they hardly moved at all.

The end of the first song nearly brought tears to my eyes. The lighting and scenery mixed with the music's intense emotion and powerful composition to create something beautiful and perfect. After the first song, the screen was raised and Jon Thor Birgisso played his guitar solo while his huge shadow mimicked him in the background. On cue, the bassist joined him, followed by the keyboardist and eventually the four-girl orchestra.

Each song was greeted with assurance and was praised long afterwards, for good reason. The sold out Opera House (it was sold out shortly after going on sale) was friggin' huge and every person was on the edge of their seat. In one of their songs, the band completely stopped playing and froze for what seemed like 30 seconds and everyone in the audience, probably for the first time in their lives, witnessed geniune silence.

Before I knew it, the band left the stage. I've never heard so much applause at the end of a show. Obviously, they came out a few minutes later for an encore. They played a track that ended with such an emotional height that even I, a person who can only recall ever crying three times in the past, let out a tear that streamed down my face. I didn't even bother wiping it off.

I left the show with reinforced faith in the world. Since a group of people can join together to make such beautiful music that can touch so many people's hearts tells me that there is more to the world than we can possibly conceive. Needless to say, everyone should experience Sigur Ros live before they die; maybe they would make you feel better about life too.
